James Burgess for Ashburn City Council

Section 2.18Organizational meetings

Last changed 2005
Plain English: what this chapter covers

The Charter is Ashburn's founding document, kind of like the city's constitution. It was passed by the Georgia General Assembly in 2001. It sets up a council of a mayor and five councilmembers, a hired city manager who runs day-to-day operations, the municipal court, how elections and vacancies work, and the city's taxing, budgeting and borrowing powers. Anything the Charter doesn't cover is handled by city ordinance or state law.

The City Council shall hold an organizational meeting at the first regularly scheduled meeting in January following the regular election, as provided in Section 5.11. The meeting shall be called to order by the City Clerk, and the oath of office shall be administered to the newly-elected members as follows:

"I, ___________, do solemnly swear or affirm that I will properly perform the duties of the office of ___________ in and for the City of Ashburn, to the best of my knowledge, skill, and ability; that I am not the holder of any unaccounted for public money due to the State of Georgia or any political subdivision or authority thereto; that I am not the holder of any office of trust under the government of the United States, any other state, or any foreign state, which I am by the laws of the State of Georgia prohibited from holding; that I am qualified to hold the office which I am about to enter according to the Constitution and laws of Georgia; that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the State of Georgia; that I have been a resident of the City of Ashburn for the time required by the Constitution and laws of the State of Georgia and the Charter of the City of Ashburn, so help me God.
