About James Burgess

James Burgess’s journey in leadership and public service began early. As a high school student, he served as Lieutenant Governor at Georgia’s Youth Assembly through the Y Club, participated in debate, and was elected class president multiple times. In his senior year, he helped integrate his high school prom, earning global recognition for taking a stand for justice and equality.

James first ran for County Commissioner as a young adult and lost, but remained rooted in his passion for community. He went on to win a seat on the Ashburn City Council, where he contributed to meaningful projects like the Tom Whitsett Park Black History Memorial Mural, the Eureka Heights neighborhood revitalization, and downtown park improvements under Mayor Jim Hedges. After stepping away to focus on his career, he later returned to run for Mayor, and although he did not win, he came back again to successfully run for County Commissioner. He now serves as Chairman of the Turner County Board of Commissioners, a role he stepped into by default, and approaches with humility, focus, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Beyond elected office, James is a small business owner and marketing executive with a deep love for the arts and a heart for public service. His strong faith, close family ties, and commitment to rural progress drive everything he does. Whether supporting local creatives, mentoring youth, or helping move Turner County forward, James is guided by purpose and a passion for people.
