James Burgess for Ashburn City Council

Sec. 34-80[Representation by indigent defense counsel.]

Last changed 2003
Plain English: what this chapter covers

This chapter lays out how Ashburn's municipal court runs: when it meets, how tickets and summonses get served, what happens if you miss court, and how bonds work. It also sets up the court-appointed defense lawyer and city prosecutor positions, and the extra charges added on top of fines. If you ever get a city citation, this is the chapter that explains the process.

In every criminal proceeding in the , both at arraignments and at trial, in which imprisonment is provided by law as a possible punishment, where the accused is not otherwise represented by counsel, and where the judge determines that the accused is financially unable to employ counsel, the court shall appoint and direct indigent defense counsel to represent such accused.
