James Burgess for Ashburn City Council

Area 8 of 8

Business, Downtown, and I-75

Interstate access gets you on a list. The drive-in decides.

The problem

Badcock. Rite Aid. KFC. The bakeries. The bars. Employment in Turner County fell 2.25% from 2023 to 2024. Some of those closures had nothing to do with us — when a chain files bankruptcy up north, Ashburn doesn't get a vote. But some of them did. And this city has never sat down and worked out which is which.

What the city actually controls

Permitting speed, code enforcement, downtown appearance, utility reliability, the development authority, and whether anybody at City Hall ever asks a business owner how it's going.

For a town on an interstate, appearance is economic development infrastructure. The parks and the streets are not extras we get to after the jobs come. They are the reason the jobs come.
