Turner County’s Comprehensive Plan Kickoff — Where Vision Meets Action

Turner County officially kicked off its five-year Comprehensive Plan update with a collaborative stakeholder meeting designed to shape the county’s future. Representatives from local government, city councils, and the broader community gathered to begin building a plan that balances vision with measurable action.

Led by regional planning partners, the workshop outlined how this process will support zoning decisions, economic growth, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term development goals. More than a requirement, the Comprehensive Plan helps Turner County remain a Qualified Local Government (QLG) — making the community eligible for state and federal funding sources like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), OneGeorgia, and emergency housing assistance.

“I personally invited over 100 stakeholders to this first meeting via email — and while only 14 showed up, I’m grateful for each one who did. I hope to see even more people show up for the next session. The official date will be announced soon.” – Chairman James Burgess

Topics discussed at the meeting included:

  • Preserving our agricultural heritage while embracing smart growth opportunities.
  • Engaging the public meaningfully through surveys and outreach, not just checkboxes.
  • Updating goals and policies that are specific, measurable, and outcome-driven.
  • Ensuring every investment and effort aligns with a broader vision — not just what “sounds good” on paper.
  • Exploring data-driven approaches to measure progress over time.

Over the next few months, Turner County will host three structured workshops:

  1. Vision, Goals & Policies
  2. Work Program Action Steps
  3. Final Review & Plan Submission

These are not passive listening sessions — they are working meetings where your voice and input will help shape the future of our towns and rural communities.

This is a working document that, when done right, doesn’t sit on a shelf. It becomes a living, breathing blueprint for Turner County’s next chapter.

Whether you’re a resident, teacher, business owner, or elected official, your input matters. A strong plan reflects real voices, real concerns, and real opportunities. Join us as we build a better Turner County, together.
