James Burgess for Ashburn City Council

Sec. 34-55Delivery of principal prior to judgment and forfeiture; release of surety

Unchanged since the 2007 code
Plain English: what this chapter covers

This chapter lays out how Ashburn's municipal court runs: when it meets, how tickets and summonses get served, what happens if you miss court, and how bonds work. It also sets up the court-appointed defense lawyer and city prosecutor positions, and the extra charges added on top of fines. If you ever get a city citation, this is the chapter that explains the process.

Any surety upon any bail bond of any person charged with a violation of any provision of this Code or other of the city may surrender his/her principal at any time before forfeiture to the chief of police, who shall confine such principal until discharged by order of the , or until such principal shall give other good and acceptable security and the delivery of the principal by the surety shall discharge such surety from all liability upon the bond.

This is a plain-English guide, not legal advice. The official code is on Municode and at City Hall. Our copy is from April 30, 2026.
